“We had such a lovely weekend at Banana Farmhouse. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place with great hosts. The perfect place to get out of Nairobi and enjoy some fresh air and good food.”

Sarah, Nairobi, 2016

Banana Farmhouse dates back to the 1940s and sits in 25 lovely private acres among woods and tea farms in the beautiful hill country between Banana Hill and Tigoni to the North West of Nairobi.

Most parts of the city are no more than 45 minutes away and the house is quick and simple to get to from the city centre via Limuru Road or Kiambu Road. The house is also conveniently located for the Thika dual carriageway for those heading north to the Mount Kenya region and the Naivasha highway for the Rift Valley and Masai Mara.

The accommodation is comfortable and traditional throughout, with 4 bedrooms on the Ground and First Floors. Upstairs, the extra-spacious Cedar Bedroom has a King-size four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom, private balcony and sitting & writing area. The Mulberry Bedroom has two single beds and is ideal for children.

Downstairs, the Garden Bedroom has a King-size bed, en-suite bathroom and French windows opening onto the garden. The Jacaranda Bedroom has twin beds and a private bathroom. There is a large sitting and dining room with fireplace, and the front veranda enjoys wonderful views of the Ngong Hills, 30 kilometres away. Breakfast and lunch are often served on the veranda.

“We loved the great company, dinners by the fire, our beautiful bedroom with the terrace looking over the gardens to the Ngong Hills, breakfasts on the veranda, walks with the dogs etc. etc. We loved it all and felt very welcome.”

In front of the veranda huge lawns with a pond and flowerbeds slope down to meadows and woodland and the property’s southern boundary with the Ruaka River. There is a rustic treehouse in a huge Jacaranda tree and a ha-ha separates lawns from cattle pasture.

There are a number of walking trails through the indigenous forest around the house, which is frequented by Sykes and Colobus monkeys as well as prolific birdlife. Guests can roam around the grounds at their leisure or simply relax on the veranda or swinging beds.

Near at hand in a separate hedged enclosure is the lovely large 10×6 metre swimming pool. Also in the grounds is an elderly tennis court – the hard surface has seen better days but it’s a nice place to knock a ball about (bring your own racquets and balls).

There is a small herd of Jersey cows at the farmhouse and they supply the delicious fresh milk and yoghurt which is served to guests. The owners of the house are also keen artisan bakers and several varieties of excellent home-made bread – sourdough, ciabatta, baguettes and more – are freshly made for guests.

The farmhouse is 7 kilometres from the Limuru Country Club which has an excellent golf course; and just 1 kilometre from the Kentmere Club, which is open to all and has a bar and restaurant as well as beautiful grounds. Nearby is Brown’s Cheese which offers lunches, factory tours and tastings and Kiambethu Tea Farm which offers tours and lunches is around 15 minutes away.
