Kuota means ‘to dream’ in Kiswahili and this spectacular house was the realisation of an English family’s long-held dream of building and owning a beautiful holiday home in the African bush – somewhere where they and their friends could enjoy peace, isolation and wonderful views, together with plentiful animal and bird life, but within quick and easy reach of Nairobi and its international airport.
The result was this spacious, impressive and very comfortable bush home, built at 5,400 feet (1,645 metres) on what was once the 7,000-acre Maanzoni Ranch, sitting at the foot of the Mua Hills and just beyond Lukenya – the dramatic escarpment to the south of Nairobi and visible from so much of the City. The house enjoys fantastic vistas across the Athi Plains towards the Aberdares and Mount Kenya.
The spectacular centrepiece of the house is the Living and Dining Room which is 54 feet (16.5 metres) long and 50 feet (15 metres) high. A dramatic balcony spans the length of the room and connects the upper bedroom wings at either end of the house. There are four large double bedrooms – two on the ground floor and two on the first floor – together with a twin-bedded room on the first floor. All have ensuite bathrooms and their own veranda or balcony.
The house sits within a 10-acre site and is surrounded by 2 acres of well-established lawns and gardens planted with colourful tropical plants and a wide variety of succulents. The gardens attract an abundance of bird life and it is not uncommon to spot 70 or more different varieties during a weekend’s visit.
“We had a fantastic break at Kuota House and were very well looked after by Patrick, Jackson and co. The children were never out of the pool and even tried their hands at tennis and boule. Beautiful birdlife, excellent barbecues, very relaxing and so easy to get to from Nairobi – thanks so much for organising it all.”

The gardens also house a lovely heated Swimming Pool, a hard Tennis Court with practice wall, and even a Boules Pitch. Nearby is a private 4-acre lake stocked with Tilapia and Black Bass situated in a beautiful area and suitable for simple fishing – it is a lovely place for a barbecue, a bush picnic or evening sundowners.
There are four full-time staff on hand at Kuota to look after you, the house and the gardens – they will be pleased to cook and prepare food for you as required. Meals can be taken at the impressive dining room table inside the house, on the wide, wooden-decked veranda terrace overlooking the gardens or in the makuti-thatched poolside pavilion.
There is plenty of plains game to be viewed nearby and a drive to the house always reveals numerous giraffe and zebra on display. On an afternoon or early morning game drive it is usual to see wildebeest, kongoni, impala, eland, impala and gazelle – and occasionally hyena, silver-back jackal and bush-babies.
None of the ‘Big Five’ are resident nearby – making the area safe for walking, running, cycling and game viewing on foot. For the more adventurous, guides can undertake a 3 or 4 hour walk with you across the plains. The house operates a Landrover with driver, which is available for local game drives.
